The New Low-Carbon World – a video series jointly produced by Lancet Countdown Regional Centre for Asia and Xigua Video

THE NEW LOW-CARBON WORLD

With a special focus on the relationship between climate change and public health, a ten-episode video series – The New Low-Carbon World – jointly produced by Lancet Countdown Regional Centre for Asia and Xigua Video, has gone live. The videos feature an in-depth overview of the most critical issues on climate and health. Each new episode of  The New Low-Carbon New World  will be online every Friday. So far, eight episodes have been released, with a cumulative total of nearly 1,300,000 views.

This production comes as the impact of climate change on health gets worse and people in every part of the world increasingly see their health affected by climate change. Topics discussed in the series are selected from The China report of The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, an annual China-focused health and climate report published by The Lancet Countdown Regional Centre for Asia, based in the Department of Earth System Science at Tsinghua University. From heatwaves to flood and drought, infectious diseases to poverty and health, the special series enables viewers to learn more about the impact of climate change on health and how a robust response to climate change will bring immense benefits for the world we live in.

The year 2021 was a year of extreme weather where we saw the winter storm in the U.S. in February, the rain storm in China in July and the Amazon fires in Brazil in September. Climate change is a serious threat to human health. Achieving carbon neutrality will help prevent non-traditional health risks stemming from climate change, improve people’s well-being, and promote industrial upgrading as well as the high-quality development of the economy

Professor Wenjia Cai, Director of The Lancet Countdown Regional Centre for Asia.

Referring to the original intention of creating the science video, she said that the China report of The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change has received widespread attention from all sectors of society since its release. The report includes more than twenty indicators, each of which tells a small story about the relationship between climate change and public health in China. We hope to explain the public’s concerns in easy-to-understand language in the form of a popular science video, as a way to attract more public participation in the low-carbon transition and to join the action to protect humanity from the effects of climate change.

Through mid-length knowledge-themed videos like Low Carbon New World, Xigua Video strives to be a force to make knowledge sharing easier and more fun.

Through this particular series, we hope our users will become more aware of the links between climate change and public health and gain a greater understanding of some of the most critical issues affecting human health
