VACANCY: We are seeking a Communications Manager to join our team!

Are you an experienced Communications Manager able to think strategically and creatively and with a keen interest in climate change and health?

The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change is seeking a creative and motivated mixed-media expert with strong strategic communications and media management skills to join our team!

The appointee with join the Executive team of the Lancet Countdown, an independent, international and multi-disciplinary research collaboration based out of the Institute for Global Health, University College London.

The collaboration brings together 35 academic and UN Institutions to track how climate change is affecting human health, and how the world is responding.

Following a successful first phase from 2016 to 2018, the collaboration is about to commence a new and expanding second phase, from 2019 to 2023.

The successful candidate will join the Lancet Countdown in central London, working with the collaboration’s co-chairs: Professor Anthony Costello, Peng Gong, Hugh Montgomery and its Executive Director, Dr Nick Watts.

The post is available immediately to 31 July 2023, in the first instance and is open to UK/EU applicants.



The post-holder will be responsible for working with internal and external stakeholders to develop and agree the second phase of the Lancet Countdown’s communications strategy.

Responsibilities include strategic communications and stakeholder management, communications assets and event management, media and PR.

Key Requirements


  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, or substantial, relevant experience.
  • Experience executing a communications or marketing campaign for a product, social issue, or report.
  • Media and press experience including drafting of press releases and management of media engagement.
  • Experience communicating complex academic or scientific concepts concisely and compellingly through diverse media and formats to audiences with wide-ranging degrees of experience and expertise.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining online web platforms and social media channels including Twitter and Facebook.

The candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy and discretion, and the ability to liaise appropriately and effectively with staff and external individuals at all levels of seniority.

A willingness to travel (approx. 4 weeks per annum) and to participate in conference calls outside of normal working hours (1-2 hours per week after hours) with other time zones is also essential.
